Fit in my MacBook Pro and iMac just fine

I read a ton of these reviews, but really wanted to have this for the birth of my son. It didn’t seem like there was much consistency in the reviews, so I figured that I’d take my chances, and hope for the best. I got it and plugged it into the D-Link USB hub, and all worked well. For kicks, I tried it in both sides of my MacBook Pro, and it fit again, no problem. Haven’t done much editing yet, but it’s worked wonderfully so far.

Product defect and bungled customer service

I received this as an employer gift for Christmas. The product not only refused to charge after numerous trouble-shooting tips from the tech. desk, but its been two months since I sent it in for repairs and to date have not received it back. No one has attempted to contact me, and every time that I’ve called, I’m told that it’s at one of their third-party centers on the east or west coast. Or the person responsible is out of the country on training. Obviously they need it.

Flip MinoHD Camcorder 2nd Generation, 120 Minutes (Brushed Metal) NEWEST MODELVery easy to use in any condition, low light issues results are very good. I was very happy with the software package. the one thing I do not like is no hard copy of the owner’s manual or not an easy way to print the help section for the camera and software.

    THANKS!

    Underwhelmed
    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
The Mino HD was an impulse buy for me. I loved the form factor and figured I could keep it in my pocket almost all the time.

The first one I bought last December froze up after 20 minutes of use. I returned it and reluctantly took another. Since then I have shot a lot of video with it and can only say it’s OK at best. The lack of image stabilization makes it difficult to hold still so the video can often be shaky. Zooming while holding it by hand only makes the shakiness worse. Low light video is noisy and the sound isn’t that great (and it usually isn’t on most camcorders).

A month later I bought a Panisonic Lumix ZS3. I bought it as a camera, but I am more impressed with the 720p HD video. It is a bit larger than the Flip and doesn’t have quite the form factor, but it’s still easily portable. It has a large screen, excellent image stability, and you can even zoom while hand holding the camera and shoot decent footage. It has a wind cut option on the mic and you can use most of the camera’s scene modes while filming. Best of all is the wide angle lens and amazing zoom capability, both lacking on the Mino HD.

I live in Michigan and have to shoot in the snow for part of the year. The Mino HD is inconsistent. The snow is typically dull, grey or some other shade than white. With the Lumix in snow mode the snow is always white.

The Mino HD does have a great form factor and ease of use. It can shoot some very good video in certain circumstances. My preference, however, is my Lumix because it has far greater creative capability and the option to shoot great photos. The best I can say about the Flip Mino HD is that I am underwhelmed. Many small digital cameras are offering 720p recording with the option to use the different scene modes and great image stability. IMHO the Mino HD falls short, especially since these other camera’s don’t cost much more.

I love the compactness of the Flip Video but have not received support on how to download videos to computer or how to play back the recordings so that they are continuous play. I have written for technical support but haven’t received any help. I want to take this on a long trip but also need to know how to download the videos when the 8GB are used up.

DOES work with my macbook. Beautiful Design.
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Okay…I have owned a Sony miniDV handycam since ‘04 and it is a nice camera, takes nice video, still works great and all. Thing is: I never use it. There are many reasons for this including size, battery, media, general hassle, etc…that’s another article. I got interested in buying a pocket cam and wanted something rugged, functional, small and simple. i did some research and narrowed it down to two units. The 2nd generation flip minoHD or the Kodak Playsport (to be released in April 2010). Difficult to compare these since the Kodak isn’t out yet but the fact it is waterproof is a huge plus…there is literally no where you couldn’t take the thing from the beach to snowboarding to white water rafting. I love the concept. I figured I would pick up a flip and try it out, thinking that if it does not meet my expectations (or will not plug into my macbook) I can return it and wait for the Kodak to come out. That was three days ago. My initial impression of the flip is positive. IT DOES FIT MY MACBOOK”S USB PORT, although I did have to line it up just so and push a little, nothing scary or dangerous, just a little more force than, a thumb drive, for example. Clearly there was/is an issue with the Flip’s USB arm and I don’t know if Flip has corrected it. I was unable to get the USB arm to fit into a USB extension cable. This is a shame because in every other way, the flip is BEAUTIFUL. From its size and shape, to its ease of use, to the gorgeous aluminum body, to the touch sensitive buttons, to the red illumination behind the perforations…fit and finish is amazing. Of course, for $200, it should be high quality. Honestly, the video/sound quality is not going to change my life (I have not seen anything, in any lighting to convince me that it is an HD camera, although I have not HDMIed it to my TV yet) but everything works smoothly. The appealing thing about the flip, for me, is the all-in-one-ness of it. It requires no batteries, no media, not charger, no cables. It is a stand-alone, simple, easy-to-do-everything solution for making fun movies. With miniDV, you get an hour of video for six bucks, transferring it to a computer is a hassle, and then what? You have a bunch of these tapes lying around…what are you supposed to do with them when the miniDV format goes extinct? With the flip, plug it in and two clicks transfers the .mov files and you’re good to go. In summation, the reviews of this product are skewed due to the USB issue, otherwise I believe it would have a much better “score”. Ultimately, I am undecided if I am keeping it or not. The playsport is $50 cheaper. Please feel free to comment, i would like your input.

They say they shipped it and delivered it, but I never got it.

    Love this little video camera

I bought this camera because I have twin grandchildren and another on the way. This camera is so easy to use and so small I just love it. It’s smaller than my cell phone. You whip it out and you’re taping. No issues!! the picture and sound quality are great. The only thing is the downloading (making a movie) is a little slow. Not a problem though. Just gotta be patient.

    So much fun

I love having the newest “stuff” and this is one of the most fun things I have gotten in a long time. It fits in my pocket or purse and is always ready to go. People stop me every time I use it to see what is happening. The quality is great and so much fun to use.

USB Connection Works Properly and Without Forcing It
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I had the 60-min version of the MinoHD, which we returned because we purchased a full-sized Panasonic AG-HMC40 pro-sumer camcorder. While the Panasonic is awesome, I’ve often missed the convenience and size of the MinoHD. I use both a Mac and a PC laptop, primarily Mac, so it was with great reservations after reading all the bad reviews that I decided to go ahead and take a chance on this 2nd generation, in spite of all the USB issues posted herein. I do have the Flip brand orange, pink and white cables, and one reviewer mentioned that that solved his/her problem.

I just received the Flip, and I unboxed it and immediately tried it on the USB port of my iMac. It worked perfectly. I then moved to my year-old HP laptop, which I am forced to use because of a court reporting program :-) . Worked perfectly there as well.

One thing of note that I don’t think anyone else mentioned, at least that I read – YOU NEED ONLY INSERT THE FLIP USB SLIGHTLY FOR IT TO GET A CONNECTION, probably only about 1/4th the way in. The usb on my Flip even has a black line, and I would guess that’s to indicate how far you need to insert it to get a connection.

Another note: I also already had the Flip wall charger, and the usb went right in and is now charging the battery for the first time.

Perhaps I got one of a new batch, although I think not, because a few hours after I ordered mine I noticed that Amazon had put up a message on the page that they’re checking into a problem with the units, and for that reason the camcorder is not currently available from Amazon.com, although it is available from other sellers, and that they are working to correct the problem asap. I’m guessing I probably was the last or close-to-last person to get one directly from Amazon.com (whew, love the Amazon Prime shipping – ordered yesterday afternoon and already received).

From my previous Flip, it was a great little camcorder. My main issue with it was image stabilization, which it doesn’t have, but I found that holding it on the little tripod pretty much solves that. The issue I have with the company, and why it gets 4 stars instead of 5, is the 90-day warranty. Really, Cisco? Other than those issues, I love the ease and convenience of the Flip, and especially how easy and simple it is to do something with the videos afterwards. Quite a departure from the labor-intensive effort required to capture/edit AVCHD video on my Panasonic.

The Flip is a great little camcorder to have around. I wouldn’t want it to be my only one, but as a second one for many occasions, it’s great.
